The Core Motivation to your Career

imagesAre you in the right place in your career or do many of your hopes and dreams remain unfulfilled? Being in the right job goes right to the heart of our identities, right to the heart of who we are and to our personal well-being  But is it possible to actively shape our lives so that the choices we make will bring about the satisfaction we seek?

Career Change is about choice, it’s about having courage to make changes, it’s about taking a step back and asking why isn’t this working for me and exploring why you are unhappy in your role. It involves taking a hard look at yourself and recognising the sources of pleasure in your life and the sources of frustration.

Our personal motivation is a much more complex matter than just finding a ‘good skills fit’ and while skills and motivation are related they’re certainly not the same. Skills can be limited if they’re not energised by an innate motivation. To understand ourselves we need to see how our core motivational drives work out in every part of our lives, whatever situation we find ourselves in.

Here are a few questions to start your thought process about where you are in your career right now and where you want to be in the future:

▪ What is in your face that you are not facing?
▪ What is the worst that can happen if you face this? What is the worst that can happen if you don’t?
▪ What are you assuming that makes you turn away from this?
▪ What do you already know that you are going to find out in a year? This question requires you to supply and face your own information.
